Put the finishing touches in your home with accents that capture the feel of French Polynesian life. Oversized planters with large palm plants and broadleaf tropical plants are a good start. Tropical flowers are abundant on Polynesian islands and are commonly seen in the hair of Tahitian women; look for fabric patterns or framed art with motifs of hibiscus, orchids or white gardenia, which resemble Tahitian tiare flowers. Fresh or silk flower arrangements will brighten rooms. Drape gauzy white material over a four-poster bed or hang it from ceiling hooks to resemble the mosquito netting used in tropical locales. Include several framed photos of Polynesian beaches and landscapes or even a wall-sized mural to bring a piece of paradise into your home.
A Style All Its Own. The transitional decor is often confused with the eclectic style, but the styles are very different. Transitional will often use contemporary furnishings mixed with antiques, but even these old-world pieces will be sophisticated and have simple, classic lines. Eclectic styling is far less refined and consistent and often incorporates one type of item either as a stand alone or in a group. For instance, a living room eclectically styled would have two different end tables anchoring the sofa with two different lamps. A transitional decor room would probably have matching accessories. In a kitchen, the eclectic style would mean hand-painted cabinets and a retrofit island with different colored appliances; in a transitional style kitchen, it may include a reclaimed wood island with all matching stainless steel appliances. Window treatments would be simpler and more crisp in a transitionally styled room, while an eclectic room could have more ornate window coverings.
Selecting a theme would also be quite helpful. When furniture is placed in a room without any noticeable theme it will probably look ok, but it might miss out on its potential. So, select a theme such as Victorian, modern, western, etc. Then, make a purchasing decision that includes furniture items that match the singular, selected theme. You can also select certain themes for certain rooms. For example, many people will have a room in the house set aside for work, study, or other pursuits. However, many people will keep such rooms bare. This is unfortunate since they could make these rooms experimental and unique. There are a number of specialty furniture stores that sell Polynesian style furniture, retro-mod style furniture, Asian art inspired furniture, and many other unique styles. Why not take that dull looking room and spice it up with a radical departure from traditional furniture styles?
